Public Breastfeeding

It seems crazy that a bill needs to pass in order for a woman to feed her baby in public. Does anybody else feel this is crazy?

Leader of state Senate wants breastfeeding allowed in public

The new president of the Wisconsin Senate wants all counties to do what Dane County just did –- let mothers breastfeed in all public places.

Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, says he’ll introduce a bill to that effect. That’s after the county board in Madison OK’d it last week.

Risser tried to pass a similar mandate last session after a woman said she was told to go a restroom to breastfeed her baby in a shopping mall. But the session ended before Risser’s bill got a hearing.

Back then, critics called it a government solution to a problem that didn’t exist. Outside of that one complaint, Risser admits there’s not a groundswell from nursing mothers to allow public breastfeeding. He says a law would protect those mothers should they ever need it.

With Risser’s party now in charge of the Senate, he figures it will have no trouble passing now.
